Default Problem creating boxman character

I was trying to make boxman character.
1.I created half body
2.Mirror it
3.subdivide it

The problem is that when I subdivide it the body was behaving like two different object subdivided .What I am doing wrong?

Looks like you have some internal surfaces (front to back). These are affecting the subdivision.

To remove these, switch to Vertex mode, select the vertices down the center of the figure, switch to Surface mode. AC3D will tell you how many surfaces are in the middle - which you can then delete.
