Default Mid-Poly Dog

A low-to-mid poly dog, about 1000 faces. It was made with the box-modeling method, starting at the ribcage. The model is based off my pet husky, Jessie, who gladly sat at my feet for reference.

Quick motion test of a "tail wag" loop: (The colored areas in the motion test are my joints, I haven't textured the model yet.)

Wow! As always, amazing! Do you know of any good tutorials that show that particular kind of box modelling?

Thanks!

Here's a few good tutorials:

If you don't have it yet, you'll also want the awesome "divide loop" plugin:
http://www.supercoldmilk.com/ac3dplug/divloop.html

Box modeling takes practice to do well, but the concept is pretty easy. You start with a box, turn subdivision on (optional), and then keep extruding over and over to make it into the shape you want. Each time you extrude, you adjust the shape a little until eventually it starts to look like what you want. The most important part is not to add too much detail too soon. Block out the basic shapes first, even if they are pretty coarse, and then go in and start sculpting in all the little things only after the basic shape is right. A 3x3 cut in half or a 4x4 box is good to start with; don't start with a 20x20 or you'll have a difficult time with it. Keep it low-res until you absolutely need an edge, and then use divide loop to add them.

Here's the workflow I used for the dog:

Just a question, would you mind sharing the sketch you drew for the modeling? (I assume you made one?) I am not much of a 2d artist, and I would love a little practice on making animals. I won't do anything with any model I create using your image, but I would like to try it to hone my skills.

If you don't wish to share for any reason that's fine, but if you don't min that would be great!

You're right, I normally do sketch everything, but ironically this time I didn't so unfortunately I don't have one to share. My dog likes to sit at my feet, so I was using the real animal for reference.
