Downloaded trial version of 3ds Max and saved the *.max object as *.3ds format. Was able to import to AC3D without any issues.
Apparently no way of importing *.max directly. Very common (unable to import *.max) with most other 3D software due to Autodesk's proprietary file format which contains more then the object it self. |

The .max format is Discrete's scheme for getting the end user of the 3D object (e.g., a game publisher) to pay the exorbitant cost of 3D Max software while the intermediary (e.g., hobbyist, "mod" content creator, etc.) uses "free" versions of Max, limited by import "modpack" applets to create content for the end user products. .max is basically a roadblock to the intermediary to keep him from using (and in this case saving) full versions of 3DS Max without a license.
