Default "Fake" ropes?

I've been working on 3D models of wooden sailing ships; on these vessels one can't turn around without tripping over, or being hit in the face, with a rope. "I see ropes, everywhere..."

The upshot of this? Even with minimum no, of ropes as I see it, for reasonable level of authenticity the ropes become large in file size, to the point of being useless. If a rope is a really tall circle, as one way to think of the matter - do you know of any clever cheats for making ropes so their file size (as objects) don't get too big?

Thanks, for ideas on fixes for this, I hope!

Best, SignGuy169 (Pat)

I'd make them as a cylinder, textured with a nice rope texture. You can play with the number of cylinder sides, 8 seems a good minimium.

After following Mossie's suggestion, provided that the final application accepts "depth" or "displacement" textures (as does for instance DAZ-Studio), they would add another fine touch of realism to your model.
