Question Is there a converter for MAX files?

I don't know if this is the place for this so feel free to move it Andy. I have several 3Dstudio MAX (*.MAX) files that I need to convert for use with my programs (such as AC3D). Any ideas anyone?

I think that Autodesk offers a trial version of 3ds Max.
Now can you export anything with this version, I don't know.

Ultimate Unwrap 3D provides import/export plugins for 3ds Max (4,5,6,7,8,9).

If you have a copy of 3dsmax, you should be able to export into a number of formats from that program.

Unfortunately, if you do not have that software, I'm unaware of anyone having written a standalone/3rd-party MAX converter. The problem, as I understand it, is that .max files are not strictly geometry files, but rather files containing instructions to 3dsmax to tell it how the model was constructed --- so if one wanted to write a .max importer, they'd end up writing an interpreter to emulate the way 3dsmax reads files. And that's either very complex to do, or the info to do it just isn't publicly available.

I hope that's accurate, but I'm afraid it's not very helpful in any case ...

Thanks for the info Luukyy and Dennis. I had been told that before, but I was hoping the guy didn't know what he was talking about. I guess he did. I'll just have to borrow a friend 3DSMAX, convert the files and uninstall it, (or maybe I can get him to export them for me).

Thanks again
