Default smoothing

As a newbie to the world of 3D, I'm trying to obtain a smooth, photo-realistic rendering. Can this be done exclusively with AC3D? Or do I need some other 3rd party rendering tool?

Download PovRAY from www.povray.org. AC3D is set up for this by default - select Tools->render.

See Woody's excellent tutorials for more on Povray.

Thanks Andy!

How would I get from a POV rendering to the VRML 2 file format? Or is there a viewer/browser for the POV format? Addressed in Woody's tutorial?

Pov produces static picture files (like jpeg, gif, tiff etc). You can view these with image viewers or web browsers.

Pov is very popular but the manual is a bit technical. Woody's tutorials are the way to go.

I've got Woody's site bookmarked.

Looks like your generate your own C/C++ source code.

There is no way to convert POV to VRML?

Or is there some way I can get better 3D smoothing in AC3D? Would scaling down my model help? Doesn't have to be picture-perfect, just better than its current state.

If you've already set all the surfaces to smooth and increase the object's crease angle to 180, and it's not smooth enough, then you'll need to add more detail.

You could try using subdivision surfaces. Or just divide up the surfaces where you want to remove creases, and shift the vertices to make the overall surfaces smooth.

Thanks, Andy.

I have a lot to learn. Haven't even considered crease angle.

I'll suppose now I'll have to RTFM!
