Default Subdivision help

Why doesnt this model stay in one piece when all 3 objects are merged and then subdivided once. This is what im talking about

What do i do so the model stays together and can be subdivided smooth?

This happens because of the extra vertices and surfaces that dont disapear when you just merge two or more objects. To get that to work you have to remove the surfaces hidden between the objects and weld the vertices. To get that to work the two vertices have to be in the exact same place. In the picture you see two cubes. They are merged but when subdivided they becomme two objects. I then deleted the extra surfaces and welded the vertices. And then they act as they should.

But in your case I would have just extruded from the middle object instead. Much more easy, and you dont have to worry about the extra surfaces and vertices. Hope this helps

1.
Did they change the code to put images in post?
2.
if its not to much trouble could you post a step by step tut for this example you used
i haven't really gotten into this kind of thing before

Sweet, I got it working. Thanks for your fast reply and your help. I really appreciated it very much so.

My wireframe is different from yours in 3d i think there is a few things it didnt get.
I deleted both surfaces. I'll post an image later but as of now it works and i know how to do it now
