Default black object in planemaker from ac3d

i'm made a couple of cockpits for my planes that have worked just fine. now i've run into an issue with an engine fairing i've made. in ac3d everything is all happy and right but as soon as i import the .obj file into painmaker they come up black. just black. i don't know what i'm doing wrong. i have a picture of the thing in ac3d and then again in painmaker.

check if the image file is saved in a format x-plane understands.
sometimes a png file gets saved accidentally in 8bit colour mode instead of the required 24bit format.

Thanks guys, I think I've got it somewhat squared away now. Messed with the picture a bit and here's the result. Haven't had time yet to remap the coordinates so it looks how I want it but here's what I've got so far.
