I've done more than a few plug-ins for 2D graphics programs, but only a couple of 3D programs. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the way more complicated maths involved.

The tilings I've been doing have been to try and find some geometry that will make a decent hammered look, or ray skin (rough, pebbly leather).

http://math.lbl.gov/voro++/about.html has some cool looking geometry. Probably not printable as is, but interesting.
