Default Smoothing (not subdividing)

Hello, one thing that I run into a lot when doing things like character models is that it can be difficult to iron out kinks in the mesh from where some polies are placed further in or out from center than they should be. I know that sounds kind of vague, so I've attached an image that shows some of what I'm talking about.

Notice how the surface is bulging and wrinkled because some points are too deep, while other points are too far out?

Right now, the only recourse for fixing this is to go in and move each vertice by hand until you manage to smooth everything out. Got me thinking though, its possible to create a best fit line for a set of less than perfect points on a graph, would it be possible to create a plugin that would allow you to select surfaces, have an algorithm find a curve that best fits the overall shape, and then move vertices to fit that curve?

Essentially to even everything out to make it nice and smooth, without subdividing? Or for another hypothetical example (which I don't have anything premade to demonstrate), what if you were to start with a single quad and extrude the edges out until you made a rough ball out of them. It would be lumpy, misshapen, etc. Use this hypothetical smoothing tool and it would try to find a best fit shape and hopefully smooth it out into a perfect sphere (or at least as close to one as you could get with the given number of vertices).

Dunno if its possible, just something I caught myself wishing I had the other day when I was spending hours tweaking stuff one pixel at a time for things.

And nevermind, the function I'm looking for is already here, hiding under the Vertex menu.
And it works like a charm. Crap, I can't believe I never noticed this before. I could have saved so much work...
