Default Joints?

I recently picked up a book on 3D character design. He brings you thru all the basics first, but then he starts talking about joints and how there should be a joint tool. Am I just missing something, or is there a joint tool?

Joints are used in animation, which AC3D doesn't yet have.

The book is called Inspired 3D Character Setup by Michael Ford and Alan Lehman. It is pretty good, but I'm going to put it aside until you can use joints and animation.
