this is great mrsteve,

one last thing. i'm on a mac and don't think i can use many plugins.

but there are lots of times where i want to create a specific area on a surface to extract but it doesn't have enough vertices. or divides in the specific area of the surface.

i understand that the divide loop plugin will do this but is there a way a mac monkey like me can create specific cuts.

thanks!
matt

There are two immediate way i can think of. try this first,

1. create a block with 4x4x4. Using select surface mode, hit just the centre 4 surfaces.

2. In the surface menu, select Divide.

3. This will give you the more surfaces you need to play around with. You can also asdjust the vertices to suit your shape if you wish!

4.Then again in surface select mode, just select the individual surfaces you want to delete.

5. And boom you have you own holes where ever and whenever you need them!

the next way is a little trickier but it provides good results.

1. Start with a cube, not a block this time. and stick a cylinder right in the middle and just poking out the top.

2. Select both object but remember to select the cube first. Then in object menu, scroll down to "Boolean">Knife.

4. This has given you a surface replicating the shape of the cylinder.

You can also use knife and cutaway or just delete the surface after you have finished with it, because you may need to move it around! Alas I hope these help! I slept in till 12pm today,!
