I use Gentoo - its installation process custom-compiles everything for your machine, ensuring an optimal configuration. It's relatively painless as compared to compiling individual packages. It does automatic dependency checking and auto downloading/building of the required packages.
I'm not sure it's ideal as a representative of the general Linux population, though. *shrug* |

I'm using Yoper just now. Its main features are a tweaked 2.6.8 kernel and a prelinker, so thinks run f-a-s-t on it. The only major downside is somewhat iffy ATI graphics card support - but that's coming, I hear. I'm personally loving it. AC3D runs very well on it, btw.

definitely Gentoo!
it merges with your machine into an unbeatable piece of hardware! besides that, the portage updating system rules! the only thing is that it's not an easy install, but if you follow the handbook it shouldn't be a problem. final remark: If you can, go straight for the 2.6 kernel install (not the 2.4); much better hardware support, performance is smoother, etc etc etc oh yes! And Ac3d runs sweet in Gentoo just finished up configuring Povray for it. |
