When I select faces, faces on the other side of the Shape are being selected too?

I'm in the surface select mode... When I make a selection.. faces are being selected on the opposite side of the shape?

I only want to select faces on one side.

Select-through option is off
On makes no difference.

Edit: Seems ctrl-shift-clicking is doing what I want
and right clicking removes faces from the selection

edit #2.. still not working :|
