Default New User - How to add sections?

I am working my way through the ac3d tutorials, but have a (simple??) thing that I can't see how to do. I create a cylinder and set the number of segments. I then want to create several sections to the cylinder in the Y direction. Is there an aesy way to do this other than duplicating and joining.
Thanks.

Yes, you can extrude the top cylinder surface in the +Y direction.
Select the top surface(s) of your cylinder, go in extrude mode (mode panel).
There you may want to check "remove original" if not already checked, choose the number of sections you want to extrude, put a numeric value only in the Y field, and hit the "extrude by distance" button.

Thanks for your help. One more related question - I only seem to be able to extrude identical copies of the original cylinder if it is placed on the grid with the standard size (i.e. a single click on the grid). Can I set the original cylinder at a custom size and expect the extruded cylinders to be extruded at an identical size.

By "identical size" you mean same size of the custom sized cylinder ?
If yes, yes you can do exactly the same you were doing with the standard sized cylinder.
If no, there's a little bit more things to do before extruding, depending on what you want to do.
