how can you get things shiny/reflective like this? this was made with 3DS Max

You need to use an external renderer. Hit F7 for the render config.

AC3D is pre-configured for POVRay (povray.org) or you can try one of these: http://www.independentdeveloper.com/...rendering_soft

ok so i hit F7 but then what do i click, do i click render? i have povray, i clicked render and then povray opened and then i clicked run and i got an error i think, no picture or anything appeared

Do you have POVRay installed to the default location?

Here's what my settings are:
