Default Exporting to 3DS

Someone provided me with 3 3DS files exported from Rhinoceros. These files do not contain "nodes" which are required by our 3D navigation program. In the past I have imported the Rhino generated 3DS files into AC3D and simply exported again to a 3DS file. This had the effect of adding "nodes".

This time round, the Rhino generated files can be imported without a problem but when exported to 3DS file from AC3D and then imported again for viewing, half the objects are missing.

I am a novice at all this. Can someone advise why I lost half the objects in this simple procedure?
