Default PLUGIN: Twister

Here is my first attempt at an AC3D plugin. I thought I would do something not too complicated in the first instance.

I only have access to Windows systems so this plugin was developed using the VisualStudio Express C++. If someone wants to port to Linux, feel free.

The plugin implements a "twist around an axis" operation which can be used to create some wierd and sometimes useful shapes.

I would be grateful for any feedback on the plugin -- is there anything I have done wrong or should be doing that I haven't?

The plugin is here.

This plugin owes a debt to Dennis' many examples without which I would have been completely at sea.

Cheers, Steve.

Thanks Steve.
I'm downloading it right now and will post some feedbacks.

It works very well.
No problem at all on my side, the GUI is clean, as well as your webpage.

I won't say I will use that plugin often, but as you said it could be useful in some case.

Many thanks !

Well, I can't claim to have "ported" it since no changes at all were required to make it compile under Linux - but attached should be the plugin compiled for those Linux users not comfortable with compiling stuff (if they exist ;-)

Excellent. Thanks for trying it out. I now feel confident to try my hand at something a bit more involved.

Good stuff. I'll put the zip file on the page as well. Thanks for doing this.

Excellent plugin Steve --- AC3D has been missing a twist function. *Extremely* nice for a first plugin, too!

Now, if you're interested in doing a "Bend" plugin, I'll have practically no reason to load up LightWave Modeler ...

Thanks for the positive feedback.

Bend and taper were on my list, but I'm not sure quite how to implement them in a way that is intuitive and useful.

My immediate next project was going to be to try to do Blobs/Metaballs. I was planning on using selected vertices as the potentials, but for proper metaballs one should be able to scale the field strength .. anyway I am a long way from having to worry about that. I need to get the isosurface extraction working first.

Hi Steve.
I have installed the Twister files(.p and .tcl) in the Plugins directory of AC3D but it doesn't show up in the Tools or Plugin menu when I start AC3D. Any idea why this is happening?

That is odd. Are there any error messages on the AC3D console?

Are you running under Linux (and which version) or Windows? Could you have installed the wrong kind of .p file e.g. a Linux one on Windows or vice versa? I can't think of anything else obvious, but I am no expert.
