i see this all of the time, never have more than 4 verticles per surface, since it screws up when exporting to 3ds and tends to go to more polies

12 segments (with 360 degres of rotation on the Y axis) should be ok.
The more you draw your polyline outline far from the Y axis, the more the final result will look big ... So if you want something smaller just draw your polyline closer to the Y axis

Also draw a polyline not a polygon (as bill), and after the revolve operation go to object/optimize surfaces.
This will remove any unwanted surfaces from the handle.
