Default smoothing causing surfaces to go really dark. help please?

currenlty im making an ear, but when i want to make the surfaces of it smooth, a lot of it goes really dark. and it got even worse when i was trying to attach it to the head. why is this? and how can i fix it?

heres an image of what it looks like. i tried deleting one of the surfaces to the left (the surface which stands out on the left ear) and then creating a new surface using the exact same vertices and color and everything, and thats the result.

any help would be really apreciated =/

yay!!
i finally figured out how to fix it!!
this always happens after i post on forum for help.

in case someone else is having the same problem, i just changed the surfaces to 1sided. that fixed it =).
had to flip some surfaces after that though. and then some became red lines, which i fixed by changing the vertex order.
wee

Also try "change vertex order" nad some times "flip normal"

Also, select object -> optimise vertices, and optimise faces.
Also a black or darkened ploygon is often a rectangular one that is twisted, try triangulating it.
Also dont forget to select object --> surfaces --> set to smooth
