I don't do this type of thing when I model, so I'm curious...

How did you generate the tread pattern? It looks very consistent, like the result of an automated process (such as, using the revolve tool to get a perfectly round martini glass or a bat from a silhouette polygon). I imagine a similar process would be used to get a evenly toothed gear cog.

I can't seem to "see it in my head" how you'd do either of those... care to share your expertise?
