Newbie question: Dimensioning of 2D-cross section
Hi,
firstly I would like to beg your pardon for my english. If I have constructed a 3D-Objekt, e.g. a part of a more complicated machine, is there any feature to produce some 2D cross sections at specific coordinates and put the according dimensioning to the shown pieces? Or at least a feature to use the existing xy/zy/xz views for printing a 2D-view with the dimensioning. My idea was to produce construction plans for a CNC-mill center. Thanks for your advice! You may be able to use the boolean plugin to 'chop' up your object.
Alternatively, you may be able to remove surfaces to 'break up the object' into sections. Measure distance, select two vertices and read the distance from the information at the top of the control panel. This works on the vertices ofa line too - so you can measure the distance of the line. To add text dimensions, use Tools->add-2d/3d-text. Andy |

Hi Andy,
thanks for the immediate reply! To measure the distance between two vertices is working so far, so I have to insert the corresponding arrows on each side of the part by hand and add the measure as text. Not very sophisticated but thats working. The distance is given in arbitrary units, right? So I have to decide at the beginning of a drawing which scale I want to use and at the end I have to put the correct scaling on the plan by measuring the distances multiplied by my chosen scale. The second thing with the 'boolean' will take some time to try... Thanks so far! Norbert |

Hi,
I think I have almost the same use case here(?). I need cross-sections of my 3D model to be able to construct a measurement accurate mold based on my model. I have an another "newbie question": I want 2D projections of a 3D object. But the problem is that my object is a imported wavefront obj (originally drawn on Rhino3D) that is hollow. I would need to get even cross sections (that are not hollow) out of it and ideally be able to output to CNC for cutting the cross sections for the mold skeleton (the mold 'plug' will have ribs in between 10 cm thick foam blocks which are then sanded level with the ribs to make the designed contour). Any further ideas how to do that with the AC3D? I have so far tried boolean operations subtract and cut-away. Cut-away sort-of works, but it doesn't really do what I was wanting it to do (I wanted to get a surface, a 2D slice out of the 3D model and output that slice elsewhere such as QCad and CNC, but instead I get a part cutted away from the main object and the main object severely distorted). Subtract don't work for the object properly, it makes it only look totally distorted. It would be a great feature if this would be supported on some future version in some more automated way. So I am guessing that the boolean operations would work better if the object would be solid with no open edges. However, the object is a half of the object and is hollow. I would like to copy half, flip it around, join the halves, and make the object solid so I could use the booleans without problems. However, I haven't yet figured out how to do that. Any tips on how to do that and it would be helpful to know if that would work? Karoliina |
