Default A bit confused re "Show locked objects in 3D"

I find a show locked objects in 3D window setting in the 3D drop down menu at the top of screen. I also find a show locked object in 3D window checkbox in the Visability box, bottom left of screen.
These two settings dont seem to be interlinked.
I find that whether they're both turned on or off, or one on and the other off (either way) that if I select an object, and lock it, it immediatly vanishes from the 3D window.
Locked object display settings seem to work correctly and intuitivly in the orthographic windows.
Can anyone shed any light on where I'm mis-understanding how this functions in 3D window?
Thanks,
Spinner

I see the symptoms you mention with the non-synch'ed menu/checkbox. Seems that changing the menu item doesn't show the reflected change in the checkbox...

But viewing locked objects does work for me in 3d --- it turns all locked objects to a light gray outline...

It's a reach, but is there any chance your 3D background is set to a color that closely matches the locked object color?
