Help with texturing

Hi all, I need help with putting textures on my model. Maybe I am stupid, but I am not able to put single texture on any surface, maybe I do some base mistake, but I don't know what.

Example: clear space, creating simple cube. Selecting object, from Object menu choose Load texture (simple jpg picture). Nothing appears on any surface (all windows set to show textures, both Orth and 3D). Nothing.

What am I doing wrong?
