Default real-time subdivision preview

im working on a human head right now, and i keep subdividing it and then using undo to see what it will look like after subdivision all the time.

and i got the idea that it would be nice if i could see in one of the windows what it would look like after subdivision, in real-time. preferably both mirror and subdivision. i guess this would take a lot of cpu usage though.

anyway, just an idea

You could, instead, select your object and press 'F9' - object properties. You can then set a subdivision preview level. Leter you can commit the subdivision (under the object menu).

Hope that's what you're looking for.

Yep - like Jeff said, set the preview level and then press 'd' in the views to switch between normal and subdivided.

heh, i just found that out when playing around a bit.
was just about to write that here and then i read ur posts.

im looking at the subbed version in the 3D window right now when working int he other windows, one question though.

is there any way of seeing ONLY the preview of the subbed version and not the lines of the non-subbed one?

wow, so much easier and faster using this method..

One of the buttons in the window controls is a 'view clean' button. You can toggle this to see what the image is like without any editor decorations.

yea, i know theres a realtime mirroring in the view -> mirror, but it doesnt work together with subdivision preview. leaves a big gap in the middle.
i mean a way of previewing the both together.

thanks tho

Ah - this is because th half you have modelled is subdivided and then mirrored. The open edge along the seam is subdivided in a way that does not preserve the edge.

I agree that it would be good for open edges in a subdivision to only be subdivided in a way that would preserve the plane of the edge. 3DStudioMAX does this (and GMAX), and it makes working with subdivisions much nicer.

Might be a bit tricky to code, but I think it would be a real improvement.

Andy?

hmm, but..

an easy way of doing it would be to simply make it mirroring the image be4 subdividing it..

well, hmm.. actually its a lil more to it than that.. it would have to treat the mirrored side of the object as real, in order to make the it subdivide right by the edge.

but its not that much of a difference..
