Default Unused materials

I have the habit of saving a model's objects that can be re-used later as "components" (which would be nice to have, by the way, whenever the target software can deal with them). Problem is: such components are saved with the whole palette of materials that belong to the original file. And when I re-use them, they are imported with the whole palette, etc.
So I can end up with the exact same shade of grey in 97 materials!
How can I purge an .ac file from unused materials?
Thanks,
Thierry
