It's a bit depending on what kind of object it is.
More infos from you will help us.

actually, i'm having a similar problem with my image... I modeled a wine bottle, downloaded an image, and i can't get it to stop repeating, since I only want one label.

Can you post a screenshot of the Texture Coordinate Editor for this bottle?

Edit: I have to have the stretch so small in order to get the label to look correct, otherwise it looks too small.

It looks like you're using a "front" or "side" mapping --- this causes the label to repeat on the "back" side.

One way to fix this is to select the surfaces only on the side that you do not want to see a texture on and move those surfaces in the TCE so they do not cover the part of the image where the label exists.

This may cause an unwanted seam. If so, you can also try a spherical mapping --- however, this may distort the label.

If neither of these work for you and you're on a Windows platform, you can try the UV map plugin and give the Cylindrical Cap mapping a try. The plugin is described here: http://www.inivis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3400

Hope one of these helps...
