Default PLUGIN: Fur

The new Fur plugin (currently Windows-only) is available at:

This plugin allows you to create fur-like strands of polygons/lines from existing AC3D surfaces.

Two tutorials are available, linked directly from the above page.

You indeed have to have a large amount of strands per unit to have a proper hair effect ...
I haven't looked at all the options for now, but so far it's really cool !

Thanks luuckyy --- that actually looks pretty neat. Of course, that kills your whole low-poly philosophy here

I've yet to try this, but you may be able to place a texture on the scalp to hide some of the "sparse" look you get when the hairs point almost directly toward the camera. Not sure exactly how this would work, just something I'd thought of. Unfortunately, I won't be able to try anything with this for a while due to other projects I'm cooking up, but I'll definitely post anything I find here. (note you could also add some shorter, less segmented hairs as "filler" --- only downside is the boost to your poly count).

Please let me know if the Gravity controls make sense. By that I mean:

The default Y gravity is "-20", meaning hairs have a tendency to fall toward the "-Y" axis. Using negative numbers to influence hairs along the negative axis seemed more intuitive to me, but then "Gravity" probably isn't the best name for it. i.e., I'd think a gravity of "-20" would make the hairs fall "up" (less than zero-gravity) toward the positive Y axis.

Hi Dennis,
having a positive gravity number for hairs falling toward the -Y axis would have been more accurate, more "realistic".
But it's your choice after all, and as soon as we know how to deal with that parameter, it's not a big problem
And I can't really help you with another word for "gravity" because english is not the language I use everyday

Just one little thing I've noticed : when you manually change (with the keyboard) the number for "stands per unit" and then hit "enter" (with "real time" checkbox checked), nothing happens. You have to click on the up/down little arrow near the field to really make the change in real time.
Probably that the same problem occurs with the other fields.
But this is not a big issue 8)

Thanks luuckyy --- I suppose I could use "Influence" instead of "Gravity"? Might not be as intuitive of a word, though. I didn't care much for "Wind", but perhaps that's an option as well.

Or, the easiest solution, I could reverse the meaning of the numbers. I'll get one of these solutions soon.

Correct, this problem exists in all fields.

Perhaps Andy of someone more TCL-savvy could chime in here, but I don't know how to fire a "command" event from the keyboard input from TCL. I'll have another look, though - this is not something I researched heavily before implementing it.

Meanwhile, one thing you can do, which I've already taken to do, is typing a number near the number you want, then using the up/down arrow keys in the numeric fields - this is equivalent to clicking the up/down arrows beside the fields, but doesn't require mouse input.

This is very kludgy, though, so I'll definitely seek out the alternative. I assume there must be a keyboard event trigger somewhere in Tcl/Tk.

* Supports Enter key in numeric fields to update realtime view
* Gravity is now expressed properly where positive numbers pull objects toward the negative axis.
