Default Drawing individual surfaces in 3D

Hi,

I am new to AC3D and am trying to draw individual surfaces in 3D. This works but I am not understanding the reference system of how the point location is placed in the distance. In other modelers it is against the selected grid plan or snap to point. Can someone explain how this is working AC3D? Also is there a way to change which grid axis in 3D? And is there any way to offset the grid or snap it to a face?

thanks,
