Default working with groups

I am having difficulty creating groups that are nested inside other groups. The highest group level is easy to create. But if you want to create another group under this, you can not just select the items in the group and press the group button again. This is because you need to be in group select mode to group the objects, and by default the software will select every object in the group. The only way I found to create subgroups was by dragging one group inside another one. This can be problematic if you have all ready groups all the objects into a single group.

Also, how do you un-group just a select number of objects inside the group. In short, I need to bump some objects out of the group (bring them up one group level).

Please help!

Thank you.
