Default Create a line between two vertices...how to?

Hi there.
Is it possible to create (insert) 2 vertices and connect them together?
I'm not talking about snapping but really creating a new face.

For example...i create a cube.
Select the top and bottom 2 vertices and choose "insert vertex".
Now between these 4 vertices...2 more are created.
Now i want to select the new top vertex and the new bottom vertex and connect them so a new "edge" is created splitting the face into 2 faces.
I did manage to create a line between 2 vertices but although it looked like it...it actually didn't create a new face.

Help is much appreciated.

ps. i also saw bolleans re in the plu-in pack?
How can i boolean substract in the demo?

Thx ,
Aza

If you want to split a 4 sided surface (quad) into two, first use Surface->divide (to make 4 quads from a single quad), then select the pairs of surfaces and use Surface->combine to make them into a single surface.

You need a licence to use booleans (and other plugins) but you can see what it's capable of at:

Andy,thx for answering.
It is however not a usable option for my models.
When i divide and combine i'm always left with unneeded vertices.
Not only thta, the divide option is nice in my example (a cube) but whne talking about more detailed objects tjis is a pain....
Especially when, after a while i need to divide a surface again AFTER i did some tweaking.
Because of the extra vertices created the new divide screws it up completely.
As an example:
create a cube, select a surface, divide, combine 2 surfaces, tweak the 2 small surfaces (extrude or something) the realize the other needs to be divided as well. divide again and VOLA...8 more divisions instead of 1 edge.

How to solve:
divide, combine and delete leftover vertices, divide again.

So there is a solution for this but it's a bit longwinded.
Especially since almost any modeler has a simple "connect vertex" command which creates a new surface.

Or is it possible to divide in just one direction instead of a cross division?

A function that cuts a surface across vertices is planned.

aza, you can also delete the leftover vertices when you combine your faces together. I know it's time consuming, but it can be done.

How can I delete a line between 2 vertices?

Cheers,

aza: im having the exact same problem as you, a funciton for dividing a quad in two rather than four would be very nice.

andy: is there a way i could make a plugin that could perform quad division as described? or does the SDK just not support that kind of surface/vertex handling?(sorry i have never use the SDK to make plugins before, but im willing to try  )

The slice surface function snuck into the (bugfix 4.0.8 ) Windows release. Select two vertices and select Vertex->Slice-surface - it will split the surface up into two, across these two vertices.

splitting the polygon and merging vertices worked for me. i had the same problem when i started modelling a poly human face. i couldnt inserta edge loop because the line of polygons were interrupted in the middle. i split the face and merged the new vertices into the existing ones on other faces to get the flow.. then it let me insert the edge loop i wanted.. :-)
