Non-polygon surfaces (lines and polylines) question
Hi
How do I remove lines / polylines from an object? I'm getting an error message saying "Boolean: non polygon surfaces detected (lines or polylines). Both objects must be made from polygons only." when I use the boolean operations on a couple of objects. |

Re: Non-polygon surfaces (lines and polylines) question
Are you perhaps trying to Boolean a poly line object or something like that?
I think the rule is that both objects involved in a Boolean operation need to be composed of polygons (cylinders, boxes, spheres, etc.) If it's a poly shape you're using for one of the operands, perhaps try selecting the vertices of your shape and making a convex hull object or Ordered Surface object out of it, then involving it in a Boolean operation. Just kind of guessing from your description here...

Sorry, I shoul dhave been more specific. I have used a line / polyline to extrude an object (rotation or via the extrude tool) and I am left with a polygon object. I can triangulate its surfaces (or not) but I get this error when I try to do the boolean operation. In my newly extruded polygon object, I can see a white line where the poly line was but I can't seem to remove it from the object. I suspect it is this that is the problem. |

Re: Non-polygon surfaces (lines and polylines) question
I understand now.
I've had that problem, too, with poly lines leaving extra vertices (and a telltale white line) after you've changed the poly into a 3D object. Not sure if this will be the answer, but check and see if there are any double vertices along the line you drew the original poly line, or even if the poly itself is an additional object from the extruded object (isolate the object from the poly using Hide Unselected commands, etc.). Try to Merge them, or failing that, weld together any overlapping double vertices; in effect, make the poly line and the object you extruded from it ONE object with no double vertices. Maybe then the Boolean will work on it.

Re: Non-polygon surfaces (lines and polylines) question
If your object is the result of a polyline/line edge(s) extrusion then just selecting your object and then clicking on "poly" ("set surface type" panel) will be enough.

Doh - so simple.... thank you.

Re: Non-polygon surfaces (lines and polylines) question
luuckyy's tip works great --- although it *would* be nice to get a "select lines/polylines" under "Edit -> Select surfaces" --- I'm usually more interested in removing such surfaces than converting them...
If no plans are in the works for this, I could probably drum up a plugin in the near future. |

Re: Non-polygon surfaces (lines and polylines) question
Excellent idea, Dennis... or perhaps work with Andy to just get it put into the code as a standard menu selection. Shouldn't need a "special plug in" for this: it's just good functionality.
