Default Round hole in a rectangular surface?

I am a newbie, and I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to "cut", "drill" or otherwise put a round hole into a rectangular surface. :?:

Try this :

make an ellipse
set surface type to poly (bottom of control panel)
surface->make-hole
select 'edge' vertices and resize in one dimension to zero width - do this until you get 'square' edges.

You can select the centre vertices and move the round hole about within the square.

another simple way to do it is make a flat rectangle. Then make an elipse above the rectangle (say like a ft or more) then high light both and click create surface. Then will make a surface over everything. Now go to object mode and select the area in the mildde of your object that was made when you clicked create surface.

hide it and delete whats ont he screen. Now unhide what you made and go to vertices mode and highlight the area where the rectangle was and click remove surface. do the same for where the elipse was and click remove surface. Now you have a rectangle with a round hole in it. Just highliight the model and drag from the center of the highlight box and flatten it and your done.

Thanks, Andy for taking the time to produce the image. Being a visual person this animation really helps me understand the process quickly, saving me a great deal of time.

Not to tell you what you should do, however my feelings are basic construction techniques such as this example animation, might serve all beginners well if they were posted as tutorials (Or How-to's) on the home page, or where the ever the tutorials are listed, as they become lost amount the posted messages (I have made a AC3D folder with all the worthwhile suggestions).

In addition, the AC3D PDF manuals could be updated to include many of the things discovered on the message boards so that all such things are all in one in place, anyway thanks much for your constant and greatly appreciated helpfulness for us all.
