Default making holes

Hi. I'm pretty new to AC3D and am looking for some help. I'm creating an object (its a pergola). I've got the general shape fine. However the sides of the structure have an array of rectangular holes in. I have currently been using the Surface >> Make hole option - then rearranging the vertices of the holes to get them them to the right shape and position for the hole. However the more holes i make the more messed up the remaining surfaces are and the holes 'Make hole' is producing dont want to be positioned correctly.
Was wondering if there is an easier way to go about making this structure?? Is there some way I can just select a rectangle area say and 'cut' it away???

Any help would be great

Thanks

Default Re: making holes

Another approach could be to compose the sides of multiple column/row strips (instead of cutting out a single face). You could compose one "row" or "column" of your pergola side, then copy and paste it multiple times until you have enough to compose the entire side.

I'd do this with grid snap enabled - this way, once you've finished, you could merge the strips into one object and remove duplicate vertices if you wanted to.
