Unbearably slow...

I have an ATi Radeon 7500 graphics card, P4 2.5 ghz and 512 MB DDR ram.

I have loaded up a landscape from the tutorial on modelling landscapes but trying to edit it is impossible. Everytime I deselect or try to reselect surfaces or objects, it takes about 20 seconds to change selection. Its infuriating and I cant get anything done. Is this normal? Did anyone else get this problem who used the ap?
