Here's a work-around: make a bunch of spheres and apply your desired materials to them. Then save the spheres to the library. When you make a new file, open the spheres from the library and AC3D will add the materials to the material palette. You can then delete the spheres and work on your scene as usual.

Personally, I'd love to see the ability to save a material palette to the library.
