Selecting and Unselecting

Hi,

I am new to AC3D and am trying to do some simple operations with the surfaces. I am selecting individual surfaces and from time to time I select a surface I do not want selected. I am using the shift key when selecting and would expect the ctrl key would unselect but have not been able to find a way to unselect a specific surface, leaving other surfaces selected. Am I missing a function someplace?
