Default Quasi-Random Bumpy Texture?

Hello all,

I'm going to be redoing a mesh soon that I would like to give baked in texture to some surfaces. I'd like to make it look like rough hammered metal, or a gravely kind of surface that is slightly melted (so that you've got random but more or less uniform small dimples and rounded peaks).

Does anyone know if there's an easy way of doing that over large areas in AC3D? I know I could model it all vertex by vertex, but I'd like to avoid that kind of tedium if someone knows say "Just set the Greeble tool to X and Y and then subdivide it!" (I tried that, didn't find any settings that gave good results for me though)

Bas Relief From Texture with a nice texture of gravel is very close, but just gives me a flat sheet (will have lots of curves that will need this applied to them).

Look at Dennis's supercoldmilk plugins, available under "Resources" on the Invis.com main page. he has a couple of plugins that might do what you want. Plus, a lot more great plugins.

I believe the Noise plugin will do quite well, gratci.

While I'm at it, anybody know if there's a plugin to turn a single poly into a grid?

If the poly is a single quad - object - subdivide - repeat a few times then object - commit subdivision.

There is a subdivide tool under the surface menu, too.

Well it has Divide, not a true subdivide.

Unfortunately, these plugins require polygon count to work, and I don't think 3D printing works with bump maps.

High poly counts are a fact of life with 3d printers since they don't do any smooth shading, either.

I've been playing with different tiling looking for a way to generate textured surfaces, e.g., hammer marks. The semi-randomness has been eluding me so far, but I've generated a nice diamond grip pattern as well as egg-carton shapes.

Well you can always do it the hard way, but yeah, I'd like a plugin that could apply baked in texture to an existing surface as well.

The noise option was... "less than optimal" in actual practice.
