Default subdividing parts of an object

Hello,

I thought I´d better ask this in a new thread than hijacking the other one again.

I have an object I want to smooth on the outside for printing, but only in a certain region so that some hard edges are preserved. Subdividing seems to take the *whole* object. I have tried to select only the surfaces I want, but I can´t seem to the subdivision bit of the menu. I can press the button Subdiv+ and it seems to do what I want, but when I change to object mode to be able to press on ´commit subdivision´ for export it again looks like the subdivisions of all the surfaces have changed.

So how can I smooth out only a part of a multi-surface object?

Best

Edi

Subdivision will always work on the entire object. If you have areas that are smoothing and you don't want them to, you need to add detail e.g. introduce more surfaces at corners or edges you want to appear sharp.

Try subdividing a block e.g. 5x5x5, compared with a cube. If you reduce the size of the square surfaces near an edge of a block, you can make the edges look a lot sharper.

You can also extrude-in-place by selecting some surfaces, pressing extrude and clicking on the selection. This will insert extra surfaces at the edge of the selection. You see that the new surfaces can be hard to see if you switch off display of subdivisions (press 'd' to switch display of subdivisions).
