Default PLUGIN: Displacement Mapper

This plugin adds displacement map support to AC3D.

Displacement mapping is a techique for adding 3D details to a model via a texture map, allowing you to effectively "paint on" details. A grayscale texture is applied that represents height elevations for each point. The model is then displaced and the vertices are modified according to the texture.

You can download the plugin here:
http://www.independentdeveloper.com/...acement-mapper

NOTE: Because displacement mapping operates per-vertex, a high resolution mesh is required in order to get the best results. Normal maps or bump maps are suggested instead for low resolution meshes. However, high-resolution meshes made with displacement maps can be useful for generating normal maps.

If you are new to displacement mapping, this tutorial is pretty good:

And here's a pic of the trash can from the tutorial created in AC3D with the new displacement map tool:

Great. It would be cool to have a tool to create a bumpmap texture and a very low poly model from such a high detailed model.

Talking Re: PLUGIN: Displacement Mapper

That's exactly what I'm using it for, in fact... making high-res models to generate normal maps from for low-poly models.

I make a low poly model. Then I make a copy of it, divide it, add displacement maps and other details until I'm happy with it. The I use the high-poly model to make a normal map that will fit the low-poly model I started from.

Here's the link to the AC3D exporter to get your models to ATI's NormalMapper utility:
http://www.independentdeveloper.com/...l-map-exporter

If you don't like NormalMapper, Nvidia's Melody would be another alternative. Melody supposedly has some auto-reduction if you don't have a low-poly cage to start from, although I've had trouble getting Melody to work which is why I use ATI's tool.

Will this work on a Mac too?
