v6.023 winxp
I have loads of parts i've made for my models (motorcycles) which have been centred 0,0,0 i move them into the desired position and save as .3ds but when i reload the parts are either in their original position or some seem to have been moved along the z axis or randomly moved? i've noticed on object props that it's not updating co-ords, dunno if this has anything to do with it? is it a problem with .3ds import/export? never had this problem with previous versions of ac3d |

Deleted my prefs.txt which has sorted the co-ords problem but objects are still not saving in correct position?
Is it just me who's having this problem with .3ds |

Hi,
I've done a small test and the result is that all the objects of a 3ds model exported by AC3D are centered on the Y axis when imported back ... I'm not using 3ds format a lot, but well ... there might be a little problem yes. A workaround for that would be to not import the 3ds models back into AC3D, and to just work with ac files ...

thx but i dont think i should have download another 3d program to needlessly convert my models into different file formats in order to do what ac3d did perfectly before.

I understand.
It was just a suggestion if you are in a hurry for exporting your models.

Are you sure the objects are badly positioned? We have tested this and found AC3D to be better at loading 3DS files than other software.
Are the files you are loading from 3D Studio Max or from some other program that writes 3DS files? |

The models are made with ac3d, here's an example of whats happening the first shows how it should be while the second shows how its saving/reloading in ac3d

I have seen this kind of misalignment of objects in some of the applications I model for. I made a similar mistake when I first started modeling.
Try changing your method of building a model. In many cases, the front is looking back through the handlebars to the back of the bike. The side is the side view of the cycle. The top is the top down view. (I know it is obvious) Basically, try rotating you model 90 degrees on the X axis. Then make sure the model is aligned with the major axis to keep the program you are exporting to from making any changes you don't expect. If you forget, some programs will try and adjust the model's objects to where the program thinks they should be. That usually ends up making your model look like what you generated when you reloaded to AC3D. I know it sounds as if it shouldn't matter, but some programs are pretty particular in this aspect. |
