If I am version 9, I get there are new features, but are the .ac files backward compatible to version 8? I am having a lot of trouble with version 9 just disappearing without a trace when in use. No message, no process, no nothing. I also am having lot's of trouble with features working and not working over time. For example I won't be able to move in 3d, but if I change views and come back later it works ok. Selection of vertices seems to be hard to predict. Version 8 is the same as ever.

10-20 - As a follow up - I have a simple .ac file with which I select two adjacent vertices (select through on) and move them in version 8. In version 9 the same action results in "Nothing selected". It seems the single .ac file is compatible with both versions.
