With 3ds there are several issues.
There can't be more than 64,000 polys and/or points or you'll get an error message.
The textures can't be more than 8 letters or numbers long.
black01A.jpg >> this would be ok
black002A.jpg >> this would not
Material names cannot be more than 8 letters or numbers long.
Try exporting from max to the common dae collada format as an alternative.
Although for some reason when I use collada my material names all get changed and I often lose mappings.
