What I mean is, is an *explanation* of the file format publically available? i.e. "byte 7 should be the model name. byte 12 should be the position of the model.", etc.

Unfortunally, it's impossible to write an exporter without one. Well... not *impossible*... but more difficult and of questionable legality, as it requires reverse engineering which most companies don't look kindly upon. I'd rather not burn any bridges as I work with a lot of these people.

The 3DSMax exporter is released by Microsoft, so obviously they are ok with people doing mods, but it's unclear if the file format itself is public.

I'm working on a couple of different exporters right now for various things (back burner projects, not sure when they'll be done) and if the file format is easy, I'd certainly consider doing one for Halo 2. I have two teenage boys who are, of course, totally into Halo so I have good incentive to write one.
