It turns out that Divide and then Combine is what I needed to do. When I first tried it, it was like the Combine function wasn't working; the serfaces were still there. Then a few days ago, I walked through the process with a friend and then it worked. I don't know what I did wrong... I think it might have just been a glitch, or maybe my RAM was packed. Whatever the case may be, it works now.
