Selection shape OTHER than rectangle?

Is it possible to make selections in shapes other than rectangles?
I want to make a diagonal selection of objects, and the only way I currently know is to make multiple small "box" selections, which is tedious and time consuming.

What I'd like to do is select everything under the white diagonal object. And since I'll be subdividing the selecting, it would be best to have as few surfaces selected as possible. But, with manual "box" selections, I end up with many extraneous selections.
