Default About texturing, too

Something escapes me in AC3D's texturing.
The screenshot shows part of my latest model, a French submarine that was the largest in the world back in 1915. The bow markings have been textured, of course, yet their background surfaces appear slightly darker than the rest of the hull.
But these surfaces have been cut away as a separate object and colored white (material #1) before texturing. And the texture's green is exactly the same as the rest of the hull's (I have checked and re-checked). How come?
As this is a common little annoyance with my AC3D models, can you help?
Thanks,
Thierry
