I am working on a mesh for an involute gear I need to print, but things get a bit weird whenever I go to add in the third dimension. If I use the thicken function (right) the object turns into a complete mess, and if I extrude (left) the surfaces are oriented everywhichway. Using 'unify normals' on the object, (even when I duplicate the line and add the surfaces in myself) causes AC3D to crash. It does not crash when I unify normals on other objects within the file, or in other objects in new files. I even started over completely from scratch with a brand new file to rule out any orphaned vertices/surfaces/whatevers I could have missed.
If I have to do this the long way then I have to do this the long way, I just want to make sure that there's not something seriously wrong with this that's going to cause my printer to choke on its g-code when I go to print it. Advice welcome |

Before you try and fix it though - please send me a the file so I can investigate the crash.
You may have some odd non-valid surfaces in there which are causing problems. Try selecting all, then optimizing the vertices and surfaces and see if that cleans up the model. Anyway, if you send me the file, I will be able to take a better look. |
