And, to hopefully pre-empt any further confusion here, if you need to use Andy's technique for more than one hole in a surface, try dividing the surface first (using Surface -> Divide or the Knife plugin). |

I hadn't thought of that one! That's the best I've seen yet. Of course it should be, coming from Andy.
Replace the entire surface polygon with a new "hull" object with the hole in it, and then just join it to the rest of the object. Ingenious! I'll have to remember that one myself...
