Default Quick question about hiding vertices

I am a regular user of Abacus Flight Sim Design Studio and am looking to use AC3D to create objects I can use in other 3D packages (FSDS is particularly unhelpful at this). So far I can see a lot of similar methods between the 2 packages but a must have for me is the ability to selected vertices in an object and hide them so I can work on the unhidden vertices. For example, looking at a parallel cylinder from the y axis I would like to select a particular vertex in the top disk but not the paralled one underneath it. To do this in FSDS I would simply select the bottom vertices and hide them but still be able to see the top ones. I seem unable to do that in AC3D, it hides the whole object everytime. Am I missing something as this would seem to me to be a basic requirement? Many thanks
